A new focus group to track progress of initiatives<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1M will be used as an additional target group to track over the next 2 years.\u00a0 Further 1st year groups may be added also.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The current group are in 3rd year and improvements in fractions are likely due to maths work as opposed to <span class=\"il\">numeracy<\/span> strategies so a new group to work with could yield more accurate results.\u00a0 However testing can still be carried out on the 3rd years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. The <span class=\"il\">Numeracy<\/span> Board \/ TY <span class=\"il\">Numeracy<\/span> Group<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This has been a success with students from the TY <span class=\"il\">Numeracy<\/span> group creating imaginative posters on how <span class=\"il\">Numeracy<\/span> is used in everyday life.\u00a0 This will continue next year with a new group.\u00a0 Posters on problem solving have also been added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. <span class=\"il\">Numeracy<\/span> Week<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This will happen again next year as it was a success.\u00a0 It consisted of treasure hunts, guess the number of sweets in the jar and other fun games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">4. Spatial Awareness<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is going being trialled with selected 2nd year groups next year and I believe it is being taught in TY too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">5. Other Initiatives<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Further ideas on promoting progress in our objectives will be collated by team members.\u00a0 Reference was made to some successful team teaching initiatives from the Literacy group.\u00a0 An email will be sent to staff as soon as we get back in September as a refresher on our targets and how they could be achieved in each subject area.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summary of Recent Results of Surveys and Testing:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>3rd year group: <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial;\">Testing in May 2015 has varied shown progress in all 3 target areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We have succeeded in achieving our target of improving proficiency in dividing fractions with the target group.\u00a0 The latest score was 47%.\u00a0 Given that we started quite low (21%) this is a significant improvement but 47% is still low in absolute terms and can be improved further.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_7012081143383049200gmail-docs-internal-guid-62e273a0-448c-072c-35ac-2b7659f3c5a4\">We have achieved a 22% improvement but still have not reached our goal of 28% improvement from 2015 to present. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_7012081143383049200gmail-docs-internal-guid-62e273a0-448c-b477-c2cb-ce07707de58b\">There has been a 4% improvement but have not reached our target of 23% improvement from 2015 to present. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Process Began: \u00a0<\/b> <b>Nov 2014<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Current Date:<\/b> <b>27 Jan 2017<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Numeracy Team Members:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E.Deeney. D.Clarke, P.Sweeney, M.Maguire, D.Murphy, G.Geoghegan, S.McWilliams, P.McDermott<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at our progress to date it is important to look at the SSE key steps. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of <\/span><b>27 January 2017<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we are currently <\/span><b>implementing and monitoring our improvement plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0This document will be added to as further steps are taken and progress is made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A list of our current priorities are on the last page of this document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\f<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>A LITTLE HISTORY IN SSE OF NUMERACY IN PCS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Numeracy Awareness<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We felt it was important to raise numeracy awareness in PCS to lay the foundations for future initiatives. \u00a0We planned to raise awareness among both students <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teachers of how numeracy is across all subject areas and not just in maths. \u00a0This was and is an ongoing task. \u00a0Here is some of the work undertaken so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presentation to staff at staff meetings including powerpoint. \u00a0Emphasis is on how every teacher is responsible for promoting numeracy in their own subject and to actively attempt to find ways to highlight it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Numeracy is all around us\u2019 activity and photo competition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Numeracy Board. \u00a0Various subject departments contributed numeracy related visual material such as graphs and charts and these were displayed. \u00a0The numeracy board is being replaced and in the meantime some info from the BT Young Scientist competition has been put up in its place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numeracy Week planned for 6th &#8211; 10th March 2017<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posters in class. \u00a0A number of teachers have made posters of how numeracy relates to their subject and this is great their work will be shown at future staff meetings for more to hopefully follow<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>THE SSE PROCESS TO DATE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Gather Evidence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During late 2014 we gathered evidence in the form of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff Surveys<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Surveys<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparison of HL attainment in Maths at JC and HL to national averages<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysis of incoming maths test for 1st years<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Analyse the evidence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Jan 2015 we analysed the evidence and identified key strengths and areas for improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Make judgements about the strengths and areas for development \/ SSE Report \/ SIP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then compiled our SSE Report and 3 year School Improvement Plan. \u00a0In the SSE we prioritised our strengths and areas for development and our SIP then outlined what targets we set to maintain our strengths and improve in areas for development. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Implement the 3 year School Improvement Plan<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will now outline each target area in detail and give details on the actions and how we have tracked progress of our targets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gain quantitative and qualitative data, we established a focus group of approximately 30 students from 1st year in 2014. \u00a0These were and will be used to collect data year on year to compare like with like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>TARGET 1.<\/b> <b>DIVISION OF FRACTIONS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Target:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve average proficiency in dividing fractions in standard test from 21% to 40% by June 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Actions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fractions initiative undertaken with the whole first year group in December 2015. Each first year group was given one class period where they were given a test on dividing fractions, they were then retaught division of fractions and the test was redone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers asked to give tests back in fraction form instead of percentage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers asked to emphasise use of fractions when they arise across all subject areas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Progress:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the teach\/test fractions initiative all classes showed significant improvement from pre testing to post testing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We tested the focus group in early 2015 with a standard fractions test and graded them out of 100. \u00a0We then tested the same group in November 2016 with the same test and again graded them out of 100. \u00a0The results were as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall proficiency in fractions has risen by an average of 9% from 2015 to 2016. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comprises of 20 students. \u00a0The other ten only completed one of the two tests so no comparison was available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have made good progress but not met our target of 20% improvement by June 2016. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\f<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>TARGET 2.<\/b> <b>PROBLEM SOLVING<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Target:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce the number of students that say they have 1 or less problem solving technique from 58% to 30% by June 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Actions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem Solving poster and LUVE 2 CU pages in Journal, staff asked to refer to these often for all subjects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Puzzle displayed every day in the library<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem Solving posters around the school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Progress:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila has reported high interest in the daily puzzle in the library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers have reported interest in the problem solving pages and believe the students are using them<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus group were given a survey in 2015 with various questions about problem solving. \u00a0They have not been retested yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to retest the focus group on the subject of problem solving, in particular reference to our target. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\f<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>TARGET 3.<\/b> <b>CHECKING ANSWERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Target:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decrease the number of students that say they never\/rarely check their work from 33% down to 10% by June 2016<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Actions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers put \u2018have you checked your work?\u2019 on the end of tests<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers asked to regularly emphasise the benefits of checking work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Success Criteria poster made by TY student Lauren Tarpey<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Progress:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus group were given a survey in 2015 with various questions about checking answers. \u00a0They have not been retested yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to retest the focus group on the subject of checking of work, in particular reference to our target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>PORTMARNOCK COMMUNITY SCHOOL &#8211; NUMERACY STRATEGY (2016\/17)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CURRENT PRIORITIES<\/b> <b>27 Jan 2017<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><\/b> <b>Retesting Focus Group<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gain data on progress in targets further testing of our focus group is needed. \u00a0Paul and Darren are looking after this late January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b><\/b> <b>The Numeracy Board<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is under construction and will be put in D corridor asap. \u00a0There will be a grand opening in Numeracy Week. \u00a0This will promote numeracy awareness and give information and promote discussion on our 3 targets. \u00a0Exciting themes that have potential to get the attention of students will be explored, such as aviation and fantasy football leagues. \u00a0A trip to the airport could be arranged. \u00a0Puzzles can also be put on the board with prizes on offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b><\/b> <b>Numeracy Week \u00a06th &#8211; 10th March<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numeracy week is to promote awareness and improve results of our targets. \u00a0It has been a while since Numeracy has been to the fore and this will remind everyone again. \u00a0We will try to be as imaginative as possible with activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b><\/b> <b>Spatial Awareness Module<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spatial Awareness to be taught in IT classes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b><\/b> <b>TY Numeracy Group<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get some welcome help and feedback from students a small TY Numeracy Group will be formed and these will work in tandem with the Literacy Group<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Numeracy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Numeracy is a key element of our plans to improve teaching and learning in PCS. \u00a0Efforts have been taking place in the school to increase awareness of our use of numeracy in everyday life (see display below by class 3K 2014\/15) and how numeracy is not just maths, which is a common misconception \u00a0\u00a0Numeracy is across ALL subject areas and is a vital life skill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portmarnockcommunityschool.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Numeracy-Display.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7384\" src=\"http:\/\/www.portmarnockcommunityschool.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Numeracy-Display-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Numeracy Display\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.portmarnockcommunityschool.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Numeracy-Display-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.portmarnockcommunityschool.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Numeracy-Display-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/staging.portmarnockcommunityschool.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Numeracy-Display-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have outlined a number of priority areas that require development over the next year. They had Brainbox Maths and Time Tables Lotto board games which may be suitable. They mostly cater for younger students. Their maths games deal mainly with subtraction and addition problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">CURRENT PROGRESS \/ PRIORITIES 24 May 2017<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. A new focus group to track progress of initiatives<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1M will be used as an additional target group to track over the next 2 years.\u00a0 Further 1st year groups may be added also.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The current group are in 3rd year and improvements in fractions are likely due to maths work as opposed to numeracy strategies so a new group to work with could yield more accurate results.\u00a0 However testing can still be carried out on the 3rd years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. The Numeracy Board \/ TY Numeracy Group<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This has been a success with students from the TY Numeracy group creating imaginative posters on how Numeracy is used in everyday life.\u00a0 This will continue next year with a new group.\u00a0 Posters on problem solving have also been added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. Numeracy Week<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This will happen again next year as it was a success.\u00a0 It consisted of treasure hunts, guess the number of sweets in the jar and other fun games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">4. Spatial Awareness<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is going being trialled with selected 2nd year groups next year and I believe it is being taught in TY too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">5. Other Initiatives<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Further ideas on promoting progress in our objectives will be collated by team members.\u00a0 Reference was made to some successful team teaching initiatives from the Literacy group.\u00a0 An email will be sent to staff as soon as we get back in September as a refresher on our targets and how they could be achieved in each subject area.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summary of Recent Results of Surveys and Testing:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>3rd year group: <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial;\">Testing in May 2015 has varied shown progress in all 3 target areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We have succeeded in achieving our target of improving proficiency in dividing fractions with the target group.\u00a0 The latest score was 47%.\u00a0 Given that we started quite low (21%) this is a significant improvement but 47% is still low in absolute terms and can be improved further.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8914616238703210616gmail-docs-internal-guid-62e273a0-448c-072c-35ac-2b7659f3c5a4\">We have achieved a 22% improvement but still have not reached our goal of 28% improvement from 2015 to present. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_8914616238703210616gmail-docs-internal-guid-62e273a0-448c-b477-c2cb-ce07707de58b\">There has been a 4% improvement but have not reached our target of 23% improvement from 2015 to present. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SSE Numeracy Progress &nbsp; CURRENT PROGRESS \/ PRIORITIES 24 May 2017 &nbsp; 1.
